Mayor George E. Primeau, Sr. will continue the distribution of safety helmets free of charge to residents of Cohoes. This program, which started in 2006 with the former Mayor McDonald and his Cohoes Mayoral Foundation which joined forces with the Brain Injury Association of New York State to distribute helmets to Cohoes youths, focusing on spreading awareness of bike and skateboarding safety especially for those ages 14 and younger.
Please note: The only remaining helmets are size Large/Extra Large
In New York State, all individuals 13 years of age and younger must wear a helmet when riding a bicycle. For skateboarders, the City of Cohoes has a skateboard ordinance which states that all those who skateboard on public property and right of ways must wear a helmet.
According to the Brain Injury Association of America, it is estimated that every 21 seconds one person in the U.S. sustains a brain injury. The leading cause of traumatic brain injuries are falls in which bikers hit their heads on pavement. Helmets can reduce the risk of brain injury by as much as 88 percent. The association strongly recommends that helmets be worn at all times when skateboarding or bicycling.
To obtain a helmet, Cohoes residents can contact the Mayors Office at (518) 233-2119 and a staff person will coordinate receipt of the helmet with the applicant's parent or guardian.
